Katy Perry released her sophomore album Teenage Dream on August 24, 2010. The first single released from the album was California Gurls. After only four weeks of radio play, the song catapulted to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, making this the fastest rising single for Capitol Records in 40 years.Perry performed the song on the Today Concert Series on August, 27, 2010.8 Katy's song was supposed to represent the West Coast in response to Jay-Z's Empire State of Mind. Perry stated in a press release, "What about the homies, the gin and juice, the palm trees, the sun-kissed skin 24/7... I want people to want to book a ticket to California the first time they hear it. Snoop Dogg js featured with Katy on this hit single with his sentiment, I'm all up on you cuz you're representing California.
